Cooling water treatment services

The cooling systems, whether open recirculating cooling towers, closed loops or single pass systems, are an essential component in many commercial, industrial and process environments, where their primary purpose is to remove heat from a cooling system to water through a heat exchanger.

The most common ones of them are the recirculation systems that use the evaporative condensers or a cooling tower to dissipate heat. Such use of water is a highly cost-effective, energy-efficient method of heat transfer.

Problems affecting the water-cooled systems

If a cooling system, or the water used in the system is not maintained or treated, it can cause a number of common problems that affect cost, performance, reliability and safety.

The problems on poor coolant treatment and system maintenance include corrosion, scaling, contamination and microbial contamination.

CORROSION

SCALING

DEPOSIT

MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION

Such problems may affect the cooling performance, reduce the heat transfer efficiency, increase the energy costs, and reduce asset reliability and life expectancy and cause significant health, safety and compliance issues for the operators of such cooling systems.

To overcome these problems, the cooling systems and the water used in these systems require appropriate treatment, often involving the use of specific high-performance water treatment chemicals.

Successful processing of the cooling systems

Successful operation of the cooling system requires a holistic approach for maintenance and protection of both the cooling system components and cooling waters against the harmful effects of corrosion, scale formation, contamination and microbial contamination.

A well-managed cooling tower water treatment program will help to optimize the costs and operational efficiency, reduce the downtime, save water and energy, maintain the steam quality, and increase the plant reliability and safety.

The holistic approach of the Water Treatment Services for successful management of the cooling system includes the following controls:

CORROSION CONTROL
Suitable measures to control oxygen-related corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and unwanted system corrosion caused by the microbial contamination (MIC).

SCALING CONTROL
To precipitation and build-up of the hard scales on the heat exchange surfaces, piping and other interior surfaces.

POLLUTION CONTROL
To control contamination in the system to reduce any blockages, increase the heat transfer efficiency and maintain the flow rates.

MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION CONTROL
To control the microbial contamination and bio-fouling to ensure the suitable water hygiene standards and regulatory compliance.

The system must be kept clean and free of microbial contamination and pollution. A specific coolant corrosion inhibitor selected to consider the metallurgy of the system and the local water conditions must also be used.

To control a scale buildup in a typical cooling system, the following water treatment works must be considered:

• Pre-filtration or treatment of water to remove the existing suspended solids.
• The cooling water treatment chemicals that use the specific polymer dispersants to ensure that the suspended solids remain mobile.
• The side-stream flow filtration to remove the suspended solids and clean the cooling circuit.
• Periodic cleaning and disinfection of the offline cooling tower.

Microbial control, legionella and Legionnaires' disease

The cooling towers are known to present particularly a high risk of Legionella, because their mode of operation can provide an ideal mechanism for the growth, proliferation and spread of Legionella bacteria in large areas. It is known that these areas be at least 6 km away from the source cooling tower.

Do you know that the cooling towers can spread Legionella bacteria over large areas?… in some cases, at least 6Km.

Control of the microbial contamination including Legionella in the cooling towers requires a robust water treatment and Legionnaires' disease control program. This includes typically preparation of the detailed operating and maintenance procedures for the cooling tower along with a chemical water treatment program that includes use of the specific cooling water treatment chemicals, dosing equipment and data controllers.

The specialized laboratory tests must be conducted at least quarterly for Legionella bacteria along with regular monitoring and testing to confirm the success of the treatment program. The cooling tower system must also be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
